Strip Method Hair Restoration

If you have been suffering from hair loss and have tried different ways to regrow your hair with no success, you may want to consider the follicular unit strip surgery (FUSS). With patients reporting many success stories, you too can enjoy full, luscious locks once again!

What is the Strip Method Hair Restoration?

Hair transplantation is a popular cosmetic treatment worldwide. The strip method hair replacement involves removing a strip of tissue from the back of your scalp and dissecting it, then transplanting it in areas of your scalp that are thinning or balding. Transplanted hair follicles take root quickly and begin growing after a resting period of a few months. They continue to grow just like your natural hair does.

Studies have shown that the hormone DHT can attack and shrink hair follicles in patients suffering from male or female hair pattern baldness, a hereditary condition also known as androgenetic alopecia. The hair on the back of the scalp lacks the receptors for these hormones, meaning that the FUSS hair replacement method produces natural-looking, long-lasting results.

What Is a Follicular Unit?

Your hair grows in tiny groups, or follicular units, with anywhere between one and four hairs in each cluster. Each unit consists of the hair strands and their follicles, which are sac-like structures in your scalp that produce and sustain new hair growth. Removing these follicular units and placing them in thinning or balding areas delivers full, natural-looking results.

Why Choose the Strip Method for Hair Restoration?

There are many advantages to FUSS hair restoration over follicular unit extraction (FUE). It is less costly and much quicker to complete, and you can get the results you want with as many as 4,000 grafts in one session! When performed by our skilled surgeons, FUSS can provide you with dramatic, natural-looking results in as few as one to two sessions! The downside of this transplantation method is the visible linear scars it creates, but if you keep your hair at half an inch or longer, no one will be able to see any scarring.

Am I a Good Candidate?

The best candidates for FUSS are patients experiencing permanent hair loss as with those suffering from male or female pattern baldness. Additionally, this procedure works well for those with high hairlines, and patients needing correction for previous hair transplants.

If you do not have sufficient follicles in your donor zone, FUSS may not work well for you. Talk to our hair loss specialists at Amarillo Hair Restoration Center to find out if this hair restoration method is right for you.

What Is the Procedure?

Your hair transplantation will begin with our surgeon removing follicular units from the back of your scalp in a single strip, and then separating them and trimming them under a microscope to create micrografts. He will close the wound created with staples or stitches.

Dr. Jarrous will transfer each follicular unit intact to your thinning all balding areas, taking great care to place them close to each other in an irregular pattern mimicking your regular hair growth. The follicles are inserted into the balding area using micro incisions or punctures, allowing for transplantation without visible scarring in the area. Dr. Jarrous brings skill and artistry to this procedure, consistently achieving increased hair density with a natural appearance for his patients.

What Should I Expect After the Strip Method?

After the surgery, your scalp may feel tender. You may need some pain medication for a few days. We may have you wear bandages over your scalp for a day or two and may prescribe an antibiotic or an anti-inflammatory medication for you to take for several days. Most people return to work two to five days after the procedure.

You may experience some swelling around your face and eyes after your hair transplant. Some patients also report some bruising and discoloration. You may also experience some temporary numbness, at the graft sites and above the suture line at the donor site. That is nothing to worry about and may take several weeks or more to resolve.

Do not worry or panic if you see your transplanted hair falling out. That usually happens within two to three weeks after surgery due to your hair follicles entering a dormant phase. Your new hairs will begin to emerge in about two to three months, with most people seeing 60 percent of new hair growth after six to nine months. Depending on your condition, we may prescribe the hair-growing drug minoxidil (Rogaine), to improve hair growth after your transplantation procedure.

Will I Need Further Transplantation Procedures?

While many patients achieve satisfying results after their first hair transplant session, there may be reasons why you would want a second hair transplant. You may desire an increased hair density in the previously transplanted area, or you may need to address further hair loss that occurs after your first procedure.

If a second transplant is warranted, you are advised to wait at least 10 to 12 months. The reason is that over the course of the first year, your transplanted hairs will grow and increase in their diameter and texture, leaving a marked change in the way you look. You will want to wait to see the final results before deciding on the next procedure and what it will involve.
