My new favorite way to cook meat is in the air fryer! So far we’ve loved Air Fryer Chicken Breast, Air Fryer Bacon, Air Fryer Chicken Wings, Air Fryer Salmon, and so much more!

What if I told you that you could have the juiciest, most golden, delicious piece of steak in under 20 minutes? Yep, you read that right!

This Air Fryer Steak recipe puts a decadent steak dinner on the table in a total of 17 minutes (make the kids these Air Fryer Hot Dogs and call it date night 😉).

Striploin steak is coated in simple seasonings and air fried until moist and tender in the middle and crisp on the outside. Serve it with homemade garlic butter and a crispy Baked Potato or your favorite side dishes for a delicious and easy dinner everyone will love!

Ingredients needed for air fryer steak:

  • Steak: I use two 1″ thick striploin steaks — it’s our favorite cut of steak, but any will do! Keep in mind if your steak is thinner it will cook more quickly.
  • Canola Oil: adds moisture to the meat and helps the seasonings stick.
  • Seasonings: you can keep it simple with salt and pepper or use whatever blend of seasonings you like!
  • Garlic Butter: optional, but topping the steak off with homemade garlic butter takes it to a whole new level!

Air fryer steak FAQs

What cut of meat to use?

I use 1″ thick striploin steaks, but other cuts will work as well. Try ribeye, strip steak, sirloin, etc. — just keep in mind that steaks of varying sizes will cook in more or less time.

How long does it take to cook steak in the air fryer?

You can cook the steak for anywhere from 10-14 minutes depending on how done you like it! I do 10 minutes for medium-rare, 12 minutes for medium, and 14 minutes for medium-well. Keep in mind that these guidelines only pertain to 1″ thick steaks.

Do you need to flip steak in an air fryer?

You can if you want, but it’s not necessary. I leave the steak as-is for the entire cooking time and it comes out perfectly every time!

How do you store air fried steak?

Leftover cooked steak will last in an airtight container in the fridge for 3-4 days or in the freezer for up to 3 months. To reheat, thaw in the fridge if frozen, then warm in the oven, in a skillet on the stove, or back in the air fryer until heated through.

Tips and tricks

  • Bring the meat to room temp. I always set the steak out on the counter 10-15 minutes before I’m going to cook it to bring it to room temperature. This helps it cook more evenly!
  • Preheat the air fryer. You want the air fryer to be hot before you add in the meat so it starts cooking right away. If you don’t preheat the air fryer, the outside of the meat could burn before the inside is fully cooked.
  • Remove the steak right away. Remove the steak from the basket as soon as it’s done so it doesn’t continue to cook from the residual heat.
  • Let it rest. Let the steak sit for 5-10 minutes before you slice into it so the moisture can redistribute. If you cut into it too soon, you’ll end up with dry meat.
  • Use other seasonings. I use the salt and pepper to keep it simple before I add garlic butter, but feel free to use whatever seasonings you prefer!

First time I have tried steak in the air fryer. I like my steak medium rare, a little more toward the rare side, I cooked it 10 minutes. Next time, and there will be a next time, I will cut the cook time down by a minute or two. The steak was still juicy and tender.

I haven’t yet had the nerve to put an expensive cut of meat into an air fryer. I’ve always done them on a grill.
    Help me overcome this reluctance!

FAQs

What's the secret to a juicy steak? ›

As is the case with so much to do with cooking steaks, there is a key temperature involved in resting a steak. The idea with resting is basically allowing the hot steak to cool to about 120 F to 125 F. At that temperature, the cells have relaxed enough so that the juices can flow back in.

What temperature do you cook steaks in the air fryer? ›

Preheat a 3.5-quart air fryer to 400 degrees F. Season the steak on both sides with a generous pinch of salt and several grinds of black pepper. Place the steak in the center of the air fryer basket and cook until desired doneness, about 10 minutes for medium-rare, 12 minutes for medium and 14 minutes for medium-well.

Do you need to flip steak in air fryer? ›

Your steak will cook through, if left on just one side. However, because flipping can place a different part of the steak closer to the heating element (for an air fryer, this is at the top), a steak will cook more evenly if flipped halfway through.

What is the most tender cut of steak for air fryer? ›

what type of beef is best in the air fryer. As with all dry-heat cooker methods (grilling, broiling, pan frying and oven roasting), tender beef cuts perform best in the air fryer. Those cuts include Top Sirloin, KC Strip, Ribeye, Tenderloin and Tri Tip. Ground beef also can be easily prepared in an air fryer.

How do restaurants make their steaks so tender? ›

Aging: Many fine restaurants age their beef to enhance flavor and tenderness. Aging involves letting the meat sit in controlled conditions for several days or weeks [2]. This process intensifies the natural flavors and breaks down the connective tissues, resulting in a more tender steak.

How do you cook a steak in an air fryer without it drying out? ›

The best way to ensure a juicy steak is to use high heat to cook the steak quickly, which will bring it to the proper temperature without drying it out. Remember to rest your steak after air frying to allow the meat to reabsorb juices and complete its cooking time without direct heat.

Do I put oil on steak before air frying? ›

Pat them dry with a paper towel to remove any excess moisture. Season both sides generously. Let the steaks sit for 15-20 minutes to allow the flavors to penetrate the meat. To prevent the steaks from sticking to the air fryer basket, lightly grease it with olive oil or cooking spray.

How do you not overcook steak in an air fryer? ›

Flip the steaks once halfway through. If your steaks are thicker than 1-inch, add an additional 1 to 3 minutes; if they are thinner, start checking as early as 4 minutes just to be safe. Every air fryer model is different and they cook food fast, so check early to ensure you do not overcook your steak).

Do steaks brown in air fryer? ›

Air fryers circulate hot air to quickly brown the the steak's exterior for golden brown edges that mimic a hard sear. This date-night dinner is practically foolproof as long as you follow a few simple steps.

Is air fryer steak tough? ›

Food Network suggests that thicker cuts of steak, like sirloins, fare best in the air fryer because they get nice and brown on the outside, but remain tender inside. I grabbed a couple of top sirloins from Trader Joe's that were each a couple inches thick.

What to season steak with? ›

There are many spices available for seasoning a steak, with salt and pepper topping the list. However, other spices, like thyme, rosemary, garlic powder, and minced onion, are also good options to enhance your steak's flavor. Or, use a one-and-done approach with Chicago Steak Seasoning.

Should I put steak in air fryer or stove top? ›

When cooking steak on a pan, oil and fat splatter all around, which can be a pain to clean. The air fryer contains all of the splatter within the device. So, for less experienced cooks, the air fryer perfectly crisps the outside of the steak, which is sometimes more difficult to achieve on the pan or grill.

Is it better to air fry or broil a steak? ›

The Air Fryer Steak was also delicious and cooked rare too. It took a little longer to cook probably due to the 50 degrees temperature difference. I found no big difference in taste between the two methods of cooking, however, I did like the outside texture better using the Broiler.

How do you make meat tender and juicy? ›

Tougher Cuts of Meat: Cook Slow.

They're often seared first, then braised or otherwise kept moist in a slow cooker, soup, or stew. The slow cooking might cause the meat to become slightly tougher in the very beginning, but over time the connective tissues break down and the meat becomes tender and delicious.

How can I make my steak more flavorful? ›

It's as simple as this: while the steak is searing in the pan, throw in butter, garlic and thyme and baste continuously as the steak finishes cooking. The garlic-thyme infused butter does all sorts of wonderful things to the steak, seeping into the cracks and crevices, and adhering to the crust of the steak.

What is the most tender and juicy steak? ›

Grilling Filet Mignon

Black Angus filet mignon is the most tender cut of beef used for steaks. It comes from the smaller end of the tenderloin and should be well-marbled. You can grill it or cook it in a skillet and is best served blue rare or rare.
