Summary of PhD Program:

Enabling machines to interpret social behaviour in real life is a major frontier of Modern Artificial Intelligence (AI). The first step in developing socially intelligent systems that can help people to improve their social lives involves developing robust machine perception models. Unfortunately, there is almost no attention on developing systems to interpret behavior at high fidelity in a privacy preserving way. What could be inferred about linguistic aspects of a conversation when only non-verbal behavior is appropriate to capture at test time? One solution is to exploit high fidelity data that includes high quality audio and verbal content analysis at training time whilst using multimodal privacy preserving signals at test time.

The ever-increasing effects of climate change and the imposition of environmental regulations to reduce CO2 emissions encourage the use of environmentally friendly materials in engineering structures. Wind turbine blades currently face the challenge of recyclability as they are typically made from conventional glass fibre-reinforced epoxy composites. The current end-of-life treatment of wind turbine blades is approximately 50% incineration, whereas the other half is used as landfill. To solve this, using fully bio-based recyclable FRP composites (made of high performance natural fibre reinforced with biobased resins) to replace currently used glass fibre reinforced epoxy can significantly reduce the global carbon footprint.

Summary of PhD Program:

As the impact of global warming on extreme weather events, including droughts, heat waves, unhealthy pollution levels, as well as storms and extreme precipitation, are presenting themselves already, there is an increasing need to understand and predict extreme events as a result of global climate change. This is especially relevant for urban areas where most of the planetā€™s population now lives and where extreme events can be even more severe, both in intensity and in impact, e.g., urban heat island effects, dispersion of pollution, and flooding.

Thanks to the continuous increase of computing power and progress in the development of efficient numerical methods, highly-resolved simulations of the flow in the local microclimates are becoming feasible. This will enable us to improving climate models that can help assessing the effectiveness of climate mitigation and adaptation strategies. In this position, you will work on the forefront of this topic, in a team with long-standing expertise in highly-resolved numerical simulations, wall-bounded turbulence, and atmospheric dynamics.

The Four Quadrant Sailing Ship (4Q2S) project is a TU-Delft disbursed feasibility study investigating promising concepts to propel a ship entirely by wind at any course. Traditional concepts fail at least at sailing in the head quartering sector(s), making these historically proven concepts inadequate for modern worldwide logistics. Furthermore, traditional rigs are too labour-intense to compete with the fully mechanical propulsion concepts as nowadays applied in shipping. Even (partly) mechanised contemporary Wind Assisted Ship Propulsion (wasp) concepts require an independent back-up propulsion system when the wind is blowing from the forward quarter(s).

Summary of PhD Program:

The goal of this project is to work towards transitioning radar from a conventional stand-alone sensor to an intelligent and spatially distributed network of cooperative nodes. The spatially distributed aspect will provide information from many partial viewpoints to reconstruct more detailed 3D signatures of the observed scenarios. The intelligent aspect will enable the radar to adapt its parameters and processing to the changes in objectsā€™ behavior and environment, like in a sort of ā€œchess gameā€. Hence, the intended scientific breakthrough is to formulate, implement, and validate the ā€˜distributed radar brainā€™ needed to establish and support this new sensing approach, combining spatially-distributed with adaptive capabilities in radar classification.

In a Molten Salt Reactor, solid fission particles tend to sediment on a surface, such as the reactor vessel and heat exchangers, deteriorating the properties of the structural materials in the reactor. In this unique project, the PhD student will study the sedimentation of these particles and its underlying mechanisms in high temperature molten salts. The approach is to develop an experimental facility, where parameters such as temperature, flow and materials can be changed and to extract data on the tendency of solid fission products to sediment under a range of conditions. The acquired data will then be used to validate own-developed numerical and physical models for sedimentation, so that a solid calculated estimate can be made in real cases and real situations. This PhD project is part of the recently granted EC project ā€œENDURANCEā€, which is a follow-up project of SAMOFAR and SAMOSAFER, both projects focused on thorium-based molten salt reactors.

From freshwater to energy and raw materials, our entire society is built on resources from the subsurface whose distribution depends on how fluids circulate underground. To better manage those resources, we need to better predict fluid flow in the subsurface, and to better predict fluid flow, we need to better predict the physical properties of the rocks and sediments that steer it. Unfortunately, the sparsity and poor quality of subsurface data means that we only have a rough overview of what lies below the ground, while subsurface properties can change drastically even over short distances.
